Argentina's Penguins Get Their Own Census

The Wildlife Conservation Society's Penguin Project, directed by Dee Boersma, a University of Washington conservation biologist, is studying the Magellanic penguin population in the south of Argentina. The study is part of a research project that, among other scientific studies, takes a census of the penguin population. This census helps to determine the amount of mates in the area and helps analyse their behaviour. An early revelation has been that penguins are now going much further to find food, which means they spend more energy in their search and extends their time away from the nest.

U.S. Students Explore Argentina

A group of 22 students from the College of the Canyons have visited Argentina as part of a grant program from the U.S. State Department in order to promote the study of tourism in South America. The students stayed for three weeks and visited Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls, and many other destinations around the country. After getting over the initial culture-shock, the students were able to enjoy the culture and people of Argentina, expanding their world view.

Patagonia Region Gets New Boost

The Patagonia region that straddles Chile and Argentina is one of the most beautiful and remote places in the world. Both countries are now working together to promote tourism to the area by establishing a bi-national chamber, bringing 15 regions together to integrate their industrial and tourism policies. The new chamber has been launched in Punta Arenas, southern Chile.

Making Books Recycled Cardboard

During the world crisis, the Argentine people shows an environmentally and cheap way to make books by using recycling cardboard. "Eloisa Cartonera" is a cooperative that publishes books from recognized and young authors who are willing to give up their copyrights in order to help the community of "cartoneros." The "cartoneros" are the people that go around collecting cardboard and paper on the streets, trying to make a living by recycling these items. Thanks to the support of the authors, "Eloisa Cartonera" is able to publish 5,000 books a year which allows them to pay the "cartoneros" up to 5 times more than what they get selling the cardboard to garbage possessors.

Light Museum Opens in Argentina

James Turrel, an American artist that works with space and light now will have his work displayed in his very own James Turrel Museum, part of the Hess Art Collection located in Bodega Colomé, Argentina. The collection is owned by Donald M. Hess, a Swiss entrepreneur that has been buying art and displaying his acquisitions since the 1960s. It is the first time a museum is opened to display the art of the American artist and the museum will open its doors on April 22nd.

Dia de La Cerveza, as St.Patrick's Day is known in Argentina, is one of the largest parties in South America. An all night long party in the center of the city offers Irish shows in the different bars of the area. Around 50,000 people enjoy the party in Argentina.
