The town of El Calafate is surrounded by natural splendor. Situated near Ushuaia at the southern tip of Argentina, El Calafate is backed by looming glaciers, expansive ice fields, and shimmering blue lakes. The sound of slowly shifting ice sheets and calving glaciers breaks the silence, and ruptures in the ice walls are a common sight. Colorful flamingoes nest by the lakes of Viedma and Argentino.
50 miles from the town is Los Glaciers National Park, which includes the glaciers Perito Moreno, Upsalla, Onelli, and Spegazzini, and the mountains Cerro Chaltén and Cerro Torre. The endangered red dwarfed deer, punu punu, the river otter, huillín, and the guanaco are protected in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cinnamon, morelo cherry, cypress, poplar, willow, and calafate trees decorate this gorgeous park, as do violets and orchids. Perito Moreno is the most famous glacier, and is a mecca for adventure trekkers of all experience levels. Within its 97 acres are short half day or full day treks.
