Arequipa, known as the White City, is a peaceful colonial city that is situated at 2,325 meters above sea level and surrounded by volcanoes- of which the most famous and highest is El Misti (5,822 meters above sea level).
Cuzco, the "Home of Gods," as the Incas referred to it, became the capital of one of the largest pre-Colombian empires: known as the Tahuantinsuyo. Its name in Quechua, Qosqo, means "navel of the world" because Cuzco served as a hub for the empire.
Along the Madre de Dios and Tambopata rivers, are several lodges that serve as a base for jungle excursions, but these are usually on the rustic side. Because of its diverse vegetation, this part of the jungle contains a large number of mammals such as giant otters and tapirs.
The region of Puno played a very important role in pre-Inca and Inca times. According to the Inca’s creation myth, Manco Capac, the first Inca, and his wife Mama Ocllo emerged from Lake Titicaca and were instructed by their father, the Sun, to establish the Tahuantinsuyo Empire.
Twenty kilometers north from the town of Nazca are the famous Nazca Lines. Enormous geometric designs and figures of various animals run for several kilometers across the desert. The lines, best viewed from the air were produced by the Nazca culture.
