Bonito is a small remote little town, increasingly known among Brazilians as an eco-tourism destination. The little town in itself has a relaxed atmosphere, plenty of little restaurants and cafés, but it is the spectacular surrounding that attracts the visitors. There are over 30 attractions in the area, varying from subterranean caves with lakes and stalactite formations to extreme adventure sports such as rappelling and rafting. The most famous and spectacular attractions are the snorkel excursions in the Rio Sucuri, Prata and Aquario, with waters as clear as in the Caribbean. The incredible clear waters spring from subterranean sources in a limestone base, which releases calcium carbonate into the water. This calcium carbonate has a strong purifying effect, resulting in natural aquariums surrounded by lush forest. This is truly an amazing place. Due to its relatively close proximity to the Pantanal (approximately 5 hours on unpaved roads), many visitors combine Bonito with a visit to the Pantanal.
- ACCESS ROUTES
Bonito is accessible by road only, approximately 5 hours drive on a paved road from Campo Grande (the Mato Grosso do Sul´s State capital and airport). There are unpaved roads to the BR-262, the national highway connecting Corumba and Campo Grande, crossing through the Pantanal. Local transport: The long-distance bus station is 5 taxi minutes from the central area. Transport in Bonito and to its surroundings with taxis and 'moto-taxis'.
- ACCOMMODATION
Hotels and pousadas have been flourishing in Bonito over the last years, there are still many new developments planned for the coming years. Good tourist class hotels and hostels are abundant as are some good 4-star options.
- WHEN TO GO
Temperatures in summer (December to March) easily rise over 40 C , summer is also the season with most rain. Despite these climatic disadvantages all sites can be visited in summertime However, these are the busiest months with Brazilian holidaymakers (end of December to the end of carnival), so hotels can be rather full. Access to some of the most interesting attractions is limited, as there is a daily limit imposed upon the number of visitors permitted entrance. During Brazilian holidays, the most popular excursions need to be booked far in advance to guarantee access. Another month to be avoided if possible is July, again due to Brazilian (winter-) holidays. Prices tend to increase considerably.
- HOW LONG
In theory, the most spectacular excursions (snorkeling in one of the crystal clear rivers and a visit to the Gruta Azul) can be done in one day. However, we advise to spend a minimum of two days. First of all to be able to see a little more and secondly, a short stay would not compensate for the rather long drive to Bonito.
