Time seems to stand still in this pleasant city which functions as the official capital of Bolivia. The center is a huge museum in itself, boosting numerous churches and ancient mansions, both with outstanding examples of baroque art. The 'White City', as Sucre is nicknamed, is featured on the list of Patrimony of Mankind by the United Nations. At an altitude of 2790 meters above sea level, it has a tempered and warm climate.
Interesting places to visit, among others, are the convent of the Recoleta (established by the Franciscan order in 1601), the textile museum, the Casa de la Libertad (where Bolivian independence was declared in 1825). Another interesting site is found about five kilometers outside Sucre, the former mansion of the wealthy Argandoña family. After an extended tour through Europe, Don Francisco Argandoña decided to build a 'palace' reflecting the various architectural styles he encountered overseas. Although the place has been neglected for years (currently in restoration), it still is an interesting site to visit. An increasingly popular site to visit is the dinosaur tracks, just 3 km out of town at the Fanseca factory.
