Salta

The beautifully preserved colonial city of Salta is a perfect base from which to see the varied landscapes of the area or to take the magical 'Train to the Clouds', which climbs in switchbacks and spirals to the Chilean frontier high in the Andes. North of Salta, the high, windswept altiplano is punctuated by stark volcanic peaks and saline lakes. A bird watcher's paradise, the waters of the altiplano are often tinged pink by huge flocks of flamingos whilst condors, ibises and many other species of birds also make the arid expanses their home. The south-west of the region basks in a gentle climate ideal for wine production and is easily visited from the many estancias near Salta.

  • ACCESS ROUTES
Salta is located 800 mi/1,290 km northwest of Buenos Aires and there are frequent flights and daily buses to the capital and most of the nation's main cities. Bus connections with Chile and Bolivia are also possible.
  • ACCOMMODATION
Salta offers all sorts of accommodation, although there are no real 5-star hotels. Options vary from simple hostels, to good 3- and 4-stars, and to beautiful hosterias and estancias in the city's surrounding area.
