Destinations-El Chalten

Jujuy

The small town of El Chalten gets its name from the indigenous term for the famous mountain at whose feet it sits, Mt Fitz Roy. It was founded very recently, in 1985, in an effort to prevent Chile from laying claim to the territory, and has since become a Mecca for trekkers and mountain climbers seeking to explore its stunning surroundings. The town’s primary attraction remains the surrounding Los Glaciares National Park, and its several trek paths that range from full day, to three day and more. There is a palpable spirit of adventure which hangs in the air as the many expectant adventure seekers gather nightly in its several cozy bars and restaurants to prepare for their coming excursions. The town itself has little to offer in the way of amenities, as it primarily caters to rugged, adventurous travelers who have more interest in camping than staying in luxury hotels. This is however changing as its growing popularity is slowly reversing the trend, and a number of good restaurants are now available with some new hotels on the way.

  • ACCESS ROUTES
Because of the remoteness of this location, it can only be reached via El Calafate, from where buses regularly run. Or, if you prefer to make the scenic 4 hour drive, you can do so yourself with a rental car - hired drivers are also available.
  • ACCOMMODATION
There are a couple of nice hotels in El Chalten that have recently been built. From climbers hostels and charming inns to the only 4-star, overlooking the range, that will make you feel the atmosphere of this small mountain village.
  • WHEN TO GO
The best time to visit El Chaltén is from October to April, and a stay of at least 2 nights is suggested.
