EL CHALTEN FACTS

* Towering at 11,168 ft (3,405m), Mount Fitzroy is often partially obscured by cloud, which the indigenous locals confused with smoke. Hence, the name chalten in the local Tehuelche language translates to Smoking Mountain, or volcano.

* The Andean Condor, with a wingspan of nearly 10 feet (3 m), can be spotted gliding gracefully over the many valleys of the region. The countless high craggy peaks found in the mountains provide ideal condor nesting sites.
