WHY BARILOCHE IS WORTH THE VISIT

This blossoming mountain town is the ideal base from which to discover the natural beauty of the scenic Argentine forests, lakes and ski fields. Revitalize body and soul in Bariloche as you take in the brisk mountain air and spectacular views.

Within the attractive, Swiss-inspired Civic Center sits the must see Museum of Patagonia: the perfect place to learn about the indigenous inhabitants of Bariloche and the surrounding area. If natural history is more to your taste, then do not miss the Paleontology Museum, situated right on the coast of beautiful Nahuel Huapi Lake and displaying a wonderful collection of deposits from millions of years ago, including a 22 million year old shark jaw.

Just a few blocks from the Civic Center sits perhaps the most strikingly positioned church, named the Nuestra Señora del Nahuel Huapi Cathedral. Perched on a hilltop and surrounded by imposing pines, under a brilliant blue sky this church is simply stunning and it is easy to see why it has recently been declared a National Historic Monument.

While visitors will feel well catered for in this modern town, arguably its biggest appeal is the wonderful opportunities to enjoy the brilliant Argentine alpine wilderness. The water line route of Circuito Chico offers amazing views of the merging of Nahuel Huapi and Perito Moreno lakes, as well as the snow-capped peaks of Cerro Catedral, and is a favorite of any photo-op loving traveler. The vast Nahuel Huapi National Park, within which lays the famed Arrayane Forest, beckons vacationers to roam the numerous trails and observe the wildlife. Renowned for first-rate skiing (ski field Cerro Catedral is the largest in South America) fishing, mountain biking, rafting and swimming, Bariloche is a lush haven for anyone keen to stretch their limbs and get active.

Whatever your Patagonia vacation style may be, a stay in this developing city, nestled within verdant Argentine backcountry, is the perfect way to enjoy the rugged but beautiful environment whilst retaining the comforts and conveniences of contemporary life.

DONT JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT

Julio and Elva Marquez,

It is easy to say that the trip was excellent! It was great, from the moment my foot hit Argentine ground until we got in the plane to go back. All of your local agencies gave expert, personalized and friendly services. They were always there to give us a hand. They were always waiting for us at airports and ready to transfer us to the hotels. These hotels were good, very accessible, centrally located and very aesthetic. All the excursions were excellent with educated bilingual guides who were experts in their fields.

Lisa Leung

The Argentina and Brazil trip organized for us by Argentina for Less was great. The timing and amount of time for each place was very balanced and we were able to see a lot of things in a short amount of time. The tour guides were punctual, professional and willing to help us have good experiences in each place visited. They were very accommodating and knowledgeable on the history and facts. The trip was also flexible enough for us to customize our agenda according to our interests.

Diane and Jim Anderson

Having personal transfers from airports to hotels (and vice versa) and to be picked up and delivered at our hotels before and after tours took so much of the stress and uncertainty out of the trip. This service allowed us to really enjoy the sights and not worry about the logistics of getting here and there. We were provided with often exceptional guides for specified tours that always met or exceeded expectations. We had a good balance of tours on our own and those with larger groups. We always appreciated the flexibility and personal touch, AND all at a reasonable price. We highly recommend Argentina for Less and plaudits to Gavin who easily earned his beer when we met up with him in Lima.

BARILOCHE FACTS

* The indigenous Mapuche peoples from what is now Chile dubbed those living on the Eastern side of the Andes vuriloche, meaning “people from the other side of the mountain”; hence the name Bariloche today.

* Infamous 1900s American bank and train robbers, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, hid out for years in what was then a tiny Bariloche, taking refuge in the fact that there was very little access to the area in that time.

* Members of the famous Jones Family (as in ‘keeping up with the Jones’) lived in Bariloche from the end of the 19th century, and could often be seen striding down main street boasting wide-brimmed Texan style cowboy hats, revolvers sitting in their holsters. A certain Zulema Jones was in fact the first school teacher in Bariloche in 1908.
